Question:

  1. While watching a special on animals, a student discovers that hares tend to lose heat through their ears. Based on this and what is known about surface-to-volume ratios, propose an explanation as to why hares that live in hot climates (such as the desert) have large, extended ears.

Answers

the hares in deserts are exposed to very high temperatures and due to this, they have special adaptation for their survival. they have large ears which contain a higher number of blood vessels.

when the external temperature of the surrounding is less than the internal temperature of hare (when hare moves to a shady place) then the blood vessels on the outer part of the ear widen and is called as vasodilation. This results in loss of heat from the body through ears due to cooling surrounding.
