Question:

Violet Vengeance compored to wiltype chrysanthemums. Your lab is testing a new variety of chrysanthemum plant (Violet Vengean
Violet Vengeance compored to wiltype chrysanthemums. Your lab is testing a new variety of chrysanthemum plant (Violet Vengeance-W) that produces large amounts of an organic insecticide that could be a safer alternative to synthetic pesticides. Unfortunately, W grows much more slowly than other varieties of chrysanthemums. which might limit its commercial potential, Your boss wants you to determine if the slow growth is due to a problem with photosynthesis (e.g. mutant PSil system that is less efficient). You run some tests on V compared to wildtype (normal) plants that will help you answer this question. The table to the right provides the results of your tests. Chlorophyll Absorption Oxygen Production NADPH Production Based on your data, does Violet Vengeance appear to have a defect in photosynthesis? If so, where? Select only ONE answer choice. Note. "PS" means "Photosystem" ATP Synthase Activity GBP Production A. Yes, PSII B. Yes, PSI C. Yes, ATP synthase D. Yes, Citric Acid Cycle E No defect detected or results inconclusive = Equal to wildtype Greater than wildtype less than wildtype 10 Violet Vengeance compored to wiltype Pink Persecution compared to wiltype Chrysanthemum Chlorophyll Absorption While at a Horticulture Science conference, you find another variety of chrysanthemum (Pink Persecution-PP) that also produces large amounts of insecticide, maybe even more so than Violet Vengeance-WV (see question 9 for Information about Violet Vengeance). However, it also grows slowly. You run some tests on PP and W to figure out which might be better to invest some time and money in. The results are below. Oxygen Production NADPH Production ATP Synthase Activity Which of the following best explains the differences observed in growth and insecticide yield between wildtype, Violet Vengeance (W. and Pink Passion (PP)? Select ALL that apply. GSP Production Growth rate (average grams dry weight per week A. Both W and PP appear to have defects in photosynthesis, compared to Wildtype B. PP invests more energy in insecticide production versus growth, compared to Wildtype C. PP invests more energy in insecticide production versus growth, compared to W D. Question 9

Answer: The results of the tests carried out on Violet Vengeance (VV) and wild type during photosynthesis shows that chlorophyll absorption, oxygen production and ATP synthase activity in VV is similar to wild type whereas NADPH and G3P production is decreased in VV compared to wild type. During photosynthesis, PSII gets excited up on absorption of sun light and transfers electrons through electron transport chain, leading to ATP synthesis. During this process water splits and releases oxygen. As the the chlorophyll absorption and the process that occurs in PSII such as oxygen production and ATP synthase activity in VV is similar to wild type, it is clear that PSII is functionally active. So, option A and C are incorrect.

PSI is involved in NADPH production. As the amount of NADPH is decreased between VV and wild type, there will be some defect in PSI that leads to decreasing in the NADPH production. Decreased in NADPH production leads to decrease in Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) production because G3P synthesis that occurs by Calvin cycle requires NADPH and ATP. Hence, the correct answer is option B. Citric acid cycle occurs during cellular respiration and hence, Option D is incorrect.
