Question number 13 In a random sample of 100 people, 47 consider themselves as baseball fans. Compute a 99% confidence interval for the true proportion of people consider themselves as baseball fans and fill in the blanks appropriately. We are % confidence that the true proportion of people consider themselves as % confider baseball fans is between (Keep 3 decimal places) and

Answers

The formula for the confidence interval for sample proportion is:

1-24/(1.) <P < Þ+z/p(1. – )

where,

\hat{p} are the sample proportion in which we are interested.

So, p = 47 100 = 0.47

and 47 1 - p = 1- * 100 = 1 -0.47 = 0.53

we have to find for 99% confidence interval, we need to look up at the Z- table.

i.e. Z2 = 20.99 = 20.495 = 2.58

Now, the margin of error = 2.58 * / 0.47 +0.53 = 2.58 +0.0499 = 0.1287 100

Thus, the confidence interval obtained as:

0.47 -0.1287 < P < 0.47 +0.1287 0.3413 < P < 0.5987 at 99% confidence level.
