Physics problem, Plant Rock

Question:

On a planet far , far away an astronaut picks up a rock. Therock has a mass of 4.20 kg, and on this particular planet itsweight is 40.0 N. If the astronaut exertsan upward force of 47.1 Non the rock, what is its acceleration?Magnitudem/sDirection up or down?

Answers

You can use Newton's second law to determine the acceleration.

F=ma.

F = ma - mg

(4.2)a = 47.1 - 40

a = 1.69 m/s2

Since the acceleration is positive, the direction is upward.
