Question:

In this experiment we injected the sample to be analyzed by Gas Chromatograph
equipped with an FID (Flame Ionization Detector). Which compound had a shorter
retention time? Explain on a molecular level the order in which the two liquids analyzed
eluted the GC. (cyclohexane and toluene)

Answers

The retention time of compounds in gas chromatographic column is a parameter of polarity of the compounds and idea of polarity can be drawn from the boiling point of the compound. Now higher the polarity higher will be the interaction with the stationary phase in gas chromatographic column as it also a polar compound. And more polar compounds have higher boiling points or it can be said that boiling point is one kind of implication of polarity.

Now for the given compounds boiling point of Toluene is higher than boiling point cyclohexane as toulene has double bonds in its structure and it increases its boiling point. So the retention time of Toluene is higher and cyclohexane has shorter retention time.
