FOCUS PDCA is a process improvement management method, the longest one used in health care to improve quality.It stands for:

F: Find a process for improvement

O:Organise a team to improve the process

C: Clarify the knowledge present about the process

U :Understand the reason for difference

S: Select a plan

P: Plan ,D : Do ,C:Check ,A: Act

Examples,

  • Overcrowding in the emergency department is a usual scenario. According to the statistics,10 patients out of 1000 stay more than 6 hours in the emergency room.FOCUS PDCA process can be applied in this case to decrease the hours of stay in an emergency room. A team need to be formed,clarify the knowledge about the process,understand the reason for the difference and select a process followed by Plan-Do-Check-Act process need to be done for a selected period of time.Implementation of the process reveals the reduction in the emergency room overstay.
  • The suppliers who provides the patient with consultation,usually take 9-10 days for an evaluation of treatment,calculating from the patient's first phone call.Due to this only 71% of the booked patients will come for their treatment.On application of FOCUS PDCA process,the days were modified as three days for an evaluation in three months, and 90% of the patients appears for their treatment.As the process continued for 4 months,9-10 day period was reduced to five days and there was satisfactory achievement rate.
