Question:

Can a web server obtain SSL server certificates from certification authorities? If so, would both certificates be transmitted to the client under HTTPS protocol?

Answers

Certificate authorities issue SSL certificates that contain a public key and the identity of the private key owner. An example in which a web server wouldneed this is if it was communicating with Visa to verify a transaction initiated by a customer. The web server would request a certificate for from the CA,such as Verisign, so that it could encrypt sensitive customer information that only Visa could decrypt with it's private key.
Since certificates contain only the public key and the name, they don't have to be encrypted through SSL, although they do need to be accompanied by adigital signature from the CA.
