Balanced chemical equation and standard heat of reaction

Question:

ammonium nitrate decomposes to N2O and water at temperatures between 250 C and 300 C. Write a balanced chemical reaction describing the decomposition ofammonium nitrate, and calculate the standard heat of reaction using the appropriate enthalpies of formation. Please include phases and show your work on how yougot the answer.

Use the Enthalpy of formations from the TABLE OF Thermodynamic Values in the back of your chemistry book

The heat of reaction will be

DH(products) - DH(reactants)

{ DH(N2O) + 2DH(H2O) ] - [DH(NH4NO3)].

NH4NO3+Δ --------- > N2O + 2 H2O

ΔHf=ΣΔHfp-ΣΔHfr

Since

ΔHf(NH4NO3) = -87.4 kcal/mol = -87.4 * 4.184 = - 365.68 kJ / mol

ΔHf(N2O) = 19.5 kcal/mol = 81.59 kJ/mol

ΔHf(H2O) = -57.8 kcal/mol = -241.84 kJ/mol

ΔHf= 81.59 - 2* 241.84 - (-365.68) ( since 2 moles of H2O is formed hence 2*ΔHf(H2O))

= -36.41 kJ/mol
