Question:

A group of researchers are interested in conducting a clinical trial to determine whether a new drug was useful in preventing diabetes. They identified 346 potential participants for the trial. At the end of the clinical exam, 22 were discovered to have diabetes. The remaining subjects entered the trial and were divided equally into treatment and placebo groups. Of those in the treatment group, 56 developed diabetes after 4 years follow-up while 79 during the same period in the placebo group. What was the incidence of diabetes during the 4-year study?

416 per 1000

390 per 1000

173 per 1000

233 per 1000

187 per 1000

Answers

Given

Total participants: 346

Eligible participants after clinical examination:324

79 developed diabetes during the trail (when 79=324 then ?=100 cross multiply and divide i.e.,24%

Now the people without diabetes are just 245

After 4 years 56 developed diabetes. (22.8%)

Total no.with diabetes 135

Therefore when 135 are diabetic among 325

Then per 100 it will be 41.6 and therefore in a rate of thousand it will be 416 per 1000
